Principal's Welcome Message

Hello DC Families,

I am excited to start my 5th year as the Principal of DCS. Through the years, I have gotten to know many families and look forward to another wonderful year of working together to make DCS a great place.

This year we have a few new staff members who join us. In addition, the district has provided the support to add another vice principal. We are fortunate to have Alma Yohanes join our administrative team. Alma has many years of teaching experience and leadership roles, most recently as a Teacher on Special Assignment.

The majority of our staff has been involved in Professional Learning Communities training and are now ready to go full steam ahead with teamwork to analyze student data and put supports in place for students who have mastered content and those who have not. This will be a main focus this year moving forward.

DCS has been implementing Positive Behavior Interventions Systems for three years and we are now seeing the direct result of reinforcing positive behaviors consistently throughout the school. Behavior referrals were reduced by half this past school year and we applaud all of the staff who have been instrumental in contributing to this improvement.

We are fortunate at DCS to have a very involved parent community. Volunteering at the school can enhance the environment for all students. Our very organized Project Cornerstone group makes monthly visits to every single elementary classroom to provide lessons of positive character and to build social skills for contributing to a healthy environment. The Don Callejon School Community Organization gives endless amounts of time for fundraising efforts so that additional opportunities are provided for students. Some of these are music, art, middle school field trips, reward days, honor roll treats, and many others.

I encourage you to consider joining these ambitious parents in helping our school be the best.

I look forward to a wonderful 2017-2018 school year! Welcome and I look forward to seeing you at all of our special events!

Mary Martinez, Principal
