When did Don Callejon school open?
The school opened in August, 2006.

How many students attend the school?
The school capacity is 900 students. The school opened with approximately 500 students. During the 2007-2008 school year, Don Callejon School expects to have approximately 700 students (400 in elementary grades and 300 in middle school grades). The school will grow to fill the capacity as the number of students in the area increases through birth and new construction. Students may also attend the school through open enrollment procedures.

Is parent involvement welcomed?
The District strongly encourages parental involvement and input, with students inside and outside the classroom, in shaping the school and its programs, and through fundraising.

Is there be a pre-school at Don Callejon?

Don Callejon School serves children in grades Kindergarten through 8th grade who live in the Rivermark area as defined below:

  • North: Hope Drive
  • South: Montague Expressway
  • East: Guadalupe River
  • West: Lafayette Street

Don Callejon School also serves students in grades 6-8 who live in Alviso and the eastern part of the George Mayne Elementary attendance area. Students who live on Renaissance drive and attend Hughes Elementary School will also attend.

The new $21 million, 74,500 square-foot school provides students and faculty with a modernized, beautiful campus for learning and recreation. 

In addition to brand-new classrooms, students enjoy access to a state-of-the-art Media Center and Computer Lab with both wireless and hardwired Internet access.  A Multi-Purpose Building with a stage, wall tables and basketball court serves as a place for assemblies, dining, plays and sports activities.

Classrooms are located around a central courtyard which features an outdoor theater and grassy knolls.  The courtyard will also includes an outdoor lunch area.

Outdoor play areas are divided into four areas for daycare, kindergarten, elementary and middle school and are be located adjacent to a City park.

The school is named in honor of Don Callejon, former Superintendent, Boardmember and dedicated employee of Santa Clara Unified School District for 43 years.
